Building Artificial Intelligence and State Power

Over the past decade, global technology trends have expanded from traditional computer technology and social networks to focus more on a collaboration of more sophisticated technologies, more specifically, neuromorphic systems. These emerging technologies have the ability to think, learn, and behave in unique ways than ever before, ushering in a new age in information and computing. Neuromorphic systems are increasingly capable of presenting user-friendly, interactive experiences that surpass even the most sophisticated human brain. This is not to say that these systems can replace humans in leadership positions. However, as this emerging field of technology takes shape, it will almost certainly take a back seat to more traditional methods of organization and communication.

One of the most prominent global technology trends of the last decade is likely to be artificial intelligence (AI). AI is the field of science that deals with creating intelligent machines that can operate alongside humans in a variety of environments. It is a subset of the field of computer science and involves the study of AI algorithms and their implementation in a variety of situations. One such use for artificial intelligence is to build highly effective cybersecurity systems. By training artificially intelligent machines to prevent, detect, and respond to a wide range of cyberattacks, artificial intelligence is poised to play a significant role in the protection of organizations from hackers.

Another trend that is shaping up is that of next-generation software and hardware. What we are talking about here is the implementation of new computer systems that utilize natural language processing, virtualization, large-scale programming, and other emerging technologies. Such systems will enable users to leverage existing technologies and access new functionality at a fraction of the price of what it would cost for them to purchase, install, and maintain the same technologies in a new form. Experts estimate that within two to five years, it will be possible for new hardware to match the performance of existing hardware.

While it may sound like science fiction now, artificial intelligence may soon play a very real role in saving lives. In the fight against disease, medical researchers have already been using sophisticated robotic programs to make critical decisions about when to attack, how to attack, and how to protect against the deadliest diseases that threaten our ability to survive. Similarly, future systems designed to prevent crime will likely work much like human police departments have worked for years. Rather than responding to every crime, law enforcement will only initiate its use when it is warranted and will then have AI software alerting them to dangerous situations so that they can apprehend criminals before they strike.

Several well-known organizations are investing heavily in artificial intelligence research, which is expected to ultimately benefit the very people it was intended to help. IBM is one of the first major corporations to take full advantage of the power of artificial intelligence. Its recently acquired Cognitive Computing Research division has developed several new technologies designed to help organizations effectively deal with all manner of data and activities within their environment. Experts expect that within a few more years, every major corporation in the world will have developed artificial intelligence systems capable of running their own autonomous operating system.

The potential applications of such technologies are nearly limitless. Some fear that the creation of artificially intelligent systems could lead to the creation of a world where the weak are replaced by oppressive regimes. Others are concerned that the move toward a world in which there are few basic needs could lead to social chaos, large-scale violence, and even war. However, experts believe that the benefits of these programs will far outweigh any negative consequences. Artificial intelligence researchers are investing their time and effort into the development of new and more robust artificial intelligence systems, and the benefits they realize the moment that a new artificially intelligent system is released will likely be seen for decades to come.
