Google & OpenDNS Create Global Internet Speedup Initiative

In the last day if you have noticed the Internet a bit speedier you can thank a "Global Internet Speedup" initiative being fronted by Google, OpenDNS, and several content delivery networks (CDNs). The global internet speedup initiative will speed up your downloads and also domain name resolution from names like techtribune.com to IP.

Previously, most content delivery networks serve content to you based on the location of your DNS servers but those DNS servers are not always close to your location. For example, if you live in NYC but use DNS servers from D.C. then when you hit Amazon.com all of the images and other things served by a CDN could get downloaded from a server in D.C.

With the Global Speedup Initiative in place CDNs instead use the first three octets of your IP address to determine what state and city you are located in and then connects you to a server closer or exactly where you are connecting from instead of from where your DNS servers are located. This results in your data from being transmitted over less distance which results in faster speeds.

"Regardless of where Internet users are located around the world, or which OpenDNS or Google Public DNS datacenter DNS requests are being served from, users connecting to participating Internet sites and CDNs' content through OpenDNS and Google Public DNS will automatically be connected to the nearest or most optimal CDN server."  said the Global Internet Speedup Initiative Group.

The downside to the new speedup initiative is that not all CDNs are included right now. The participating ones include; Comodo, EdgeCast, Cloudfare, and CDNetworks. OpenDNS and Google Public DNS are the major DNS providers offering the new speedup enhancements.
